Pisces Cabo Fish Report, March 3rd to March 10th, 2023

Thirteen Different Species Caught, Released

Overall Catch Success Rate, All Species Combined 79%

Billfish Catch Success Rate 23%,  Tuna 18%,  Dorado 18%, Other Species 43%

What a week! The weather has been pleasant, in the low 70s, with a bit of wind in the afternoons, which allowed our fleets to capitalize on the remarkable variety of game fish found in our waters.

With the billfish release, the numbers were slightly lower than last week. The captains and crew responded daily by relying on their extensive local knowledge acquired over the past decades. However, their efforts were worthwhile. At the end of the week, a lucky thirteen varied species were in the count, including striped marlin, dorado, yellowtail, amberjack, grouper, mako shark, pompano, skipjack, sierra, red snapper, ladyfish, bonito, and even a few triggerfish!

An example was Captain Arturo “Dilva” Daniel Sandez, who ran the luxurious 45 ft Viking, “My Way,” for USAR Marshall Cromer from Oakland, California, who found an impressive variety of fish, including dorado, grouper, pompano, skipjack, sierra, and ladyfish, all caught on live mackerel.

On Monday, March 6, Captain Beto Lira, aboard the 31 ft Bertram “Ruthless,” with anglers Gerardo Rodrigues, John and Kimberly Meeks, and Kerri Sonnenberg from Texas, who enjoyed a banner day. They released a striper estimated to weigh approximately 130 pounds, three dorado weighing up to 20 pounds, and a six-pound skipjack at Destiladera.

Mid-week on a half-day trip, the 32 ft Cabo Express, aptly named “Bill Collector,” with Captain Esteban Balderas and angler Adrian Olache, scored not one but two striped marlin estimated to weigh, respectively, 120 and 140 pounds. The fish could not resist the dead mackerel trolled in front of them, only 4 miles off the Lighthouse on the Pacific side where they were released by Justin Lee Weber and Nichole Weber from Temple, Texas.

Then on Tuesday, Captain Victor Sandez and Fernando Pira, running the 38 ft Mediterranean “Speedwell,” located a large school of amberjack (also known as Pacific Amberjack, Almaco jack, Seriola rivoliana) weighing up to 20 pounds caught by Gabriella Oaks, Monalisa Oaks, and Phillip Oaks from San Jose, California and taken on mackerel.

The 30 ft. Bertram “Karina” had 13 roosters released by 10-a.m. on Friday. Captain Chato Padilla and Jorge Velez had found a school of roosterfish and a few ladyfish for Graeme Vass, Megan Walters, and Tim Murray from Los Arcos, California. By the time they were finished, they had released 20 roosterfish, one bonito, one grouper, and four ladyfish.

WEATHER CONDITIONS: Mostly calm, with 2 to 3-foot waves and 6 to 14 kts. of wind in the afternoon.

AVERAGE WATER TEMP: 69-70 F.

BEST LURES: Live and dead mackerel, ballyhoo, larger trolling lures, and cedar plugs.
