Week 25 began with a species-filled day for the Pisces Fleet, which included Blue and Striped Marlin, Wahoo, Yellowfin Tuna, Dorado, Bonito, and Ladyfish. The boats found these fish on various banks and locations around Baja’s tip. This Friday and this weekend, the number of boats fishing and the number of fish caught plunged to the lowest since the First of January of 2024, although the few boats fishing did have some notable catches.
Captain Pepe and Mates Daniel, Ulises, and Fernando took the fishing group, Artie Davenport, Brandon Linder, Cody Baker, Jim Biden, Kyle Denton, Marc Blanton, and Mark Padgett, all from Atlanta, Georgia, on the “CHASIN TAIL,” a 62-foot Viking, out to last month’s hot spot, the 1150 Bank, where they hit the jackpot releasing Three Striped Marlin in the 100 to 150-pound class hooked on Ballyhoo and Lures, along with Two Dorado, and a 35-pound Wahoo on a Rapala outside of the 1150 Bank.
The “REBECCA,” 31-foot Bertram named after the Ehrenberg’s daughter, with Captain Jose Ramon and Mates Alucano and Jose G, with anglers Jeffrey Ernest, Mark Jensen, Jose Ramon, Vincent Purcell, and William Cowles went the distance, 33 miles, to the 120 Spot where they caught and released another one of the early season blue marlin on a Petrolero lure.
Aboard the “TIBURON,” a 31-foot Bertram, Captain Rosendo Gomez and Mate Jorge V, the Emily Spangler, Eva Spangler, Patricia Spangler, Shelby Spangler, and Steve Spangler all enjoyed an exciting fishing day on the 110 Spot, 30 miles from the Marina. Their catch included One Striped Marlin on a live caballito that was safely released, along with a 35-pound Wahoo, also on caught bait.
Angler Gregory Roe from Arizona released a Striped Marlin while fishing with Captain Rafa on the24-foot panga, Anamar II. He hooked the fish on a bait near the La Casita Blanca,
Over the weekend, the number of boats fishing dropped to a handful, including the “TEJAS,” a 42-foot Yellowfin with Captain Frank Montelongo and mate Alan Silva who ran 35 miles outside, 150 degrees, where they caught and released One Striper on a lure, plus a good-sized Wahoo also on a lure, with Mary and Sean O’Brien, from California. Captain Francisco (Frank) Arturo Montelongo began fishing with his father at age seven. He moved to Cabo from Guerrero Negro at age 12, and he has been in love with sportfishing ever since – having it become part of his life, not just a profession. Captain Frank is a great Captain, outgoing and fun.
The “SEA SENORA,” a 42-foot Post Sportfisher with Captain Carmelo Navarrete, Mate Saamir Omar, and Angler Todd Ostron from California, caught and released Three Striped Marlin on caballito at Faro Viejo.
Starting the week off right, Captain Alan, Mates Yiki and Mel, and angler Timothy from Idaho – ran 63 miles on a 60-degree heading on information shared by another Captainon the “REELS N DIRT,” a tricked-out72-foot Viking Skybridge.
They were rewarded for their efforts with One released Blue Marlin and 20 Yellowfin Tuna weighing 20 to 162 pounds, which they caught on flying fish and cedar lures.
LA CHINGONA,” a 46-foot Viking with Captain Miguel, aka “Chuno” with Antonio Bojorquez from California, caught and released Six Striped Marlin and One Sailfish on caballito and Ballyhoo.
Captain Juan C. Lopez and Mate JC Martinez on the BILL COLLECTOR II,” a 35-foot Cabo Flybridge with anglers Adam Gardner, Andrew Roydhouse, Cody Cossick, Kari Gastel, and Paul Roydhouse, landed an impressive 50-pound Yellowfin Tuna along with releasing Two Striped Marlin that was hooked on Ballyhoo.
While the “BILL COLLECTOR,” the 32-foot Cabo Express with Captain Niko and Mate Erick, Jr., and anglers Benjamin Newman, Glen Pearson, Ian Newman, Joshua Payne, Nathan Smith, and Nicole Payne from Gulf Breeze, Florida, had a great day catching and releasing Four Trophy-Sized Roosterfish ranging from 20 to 40-pounds.
Angler Jordán from Dana Point, California, fishing outside the Lighthouse, caught and released Four Roosterfish estimated to weigh 20 to 40 pounds on live mullet while fishing on the “ADRIANA,” a 28-foot Uniflite with Captain Bruce and Mate Mario.
“KARINA,” a 30-foot Bertram Captain Orlando Murillo at the helm and Mate Jorge Velez overseeing the cockpit and anglers Brian Misiunas, John Keating, and Sean Donnelly coming from Pompano Beach, Florida, released Four Striped Marlin estimated weight 50 to 110 pounds with Ballyhoo at the 1150 Spot.
With Captain Jaime – locally known as “Captain Hook” is one of the top captains in the Cabo San Lucas sportfishing community at the helm of the “CALIENTE,” a 42-foot Cabo Flybridge, and his Mate Luis (Silverio) Arballo is a top-notch mate. True to his name, he moves fast, is very organized, and keeps the deck running smoothly, ensuring that guests are cared for. Their guests, Chas Kaufman, Janina VanKempen, Jason Klein, John Sultzbach, Karlee Kaufman, Kyle Kaufman, Lisa Kaufman, and Melanie Klein, from Queen Creek, Arizona, successfully released Eight Striped Marlin weighing from 70 to 100 pounds on Ballyhoo at the 1150 Spot.
The “RUTHLESS,” a 31-foot Bertram with Captain Beto and Mate Lira and their anglers and guests Charles Biter, Darrell Mogavic, Dauphne Mogavic, Jesus Romero, and Gina Byrd Biter, all from Clarksville, Tennessee, released Six Striped Marlin with estimated weights of 80 to 120 pounds on bait at the 1150 Spot.
Although the fishing week began slowly, it picked up, especially for those willing to travel some distances and explore were rewarded for their effort.
