Last year’s Bisbees East Cape Tournament proved to be record breaking one in terms of most boats and most money earned. Not surprisingly, this year topped that, by a ways! 100 boats entered the tournament with a total pot at stake of $1.6 MILLION Dollars for the largest Black or Blue Marlin Caught, Most Billfish Released and Largest Dorado or Tuna.
The weigh in for the tournament as always, was at the Buenavista Resort in the small town of Buena Vista just about 1.5 hours from Cabo San Lucas. We headed up there on day three for the last day of the tournament, hoping a big one would be landed. So far in the first two days only a 305 lbs Blue Marlin was landed, just surpassing the minimum weight of 300 lbs.
Day three though, as always, saw more fish in one day than in the two days prior. Team Buena Fortuna headed to the dock around 2:00 PM with a 478 pounder, and many thought this would be the winning fish. Then, at about 5:30 PM Team Tiger Spirit pulled in to weigh the last Marlin of the Tournament; a Monster Black Marlin, which turned out to be the Big Winner of the tournament.

This was the last fish and the LARGEST fish of the day and of the whole tournament for that matter. I approached Hugo Pino, a legendary local angler who won last year’s Los Cabos Billfish with both Tuna and Marlin catches aboard the Stella June (a 593 pounder that time); and who now, with today’s monster fish, clinched the win for the Tiger Spirit. It was an epic team effort, especially after the day prior’s happenings, when they had an issue with the boat’s hydraulic system that didn’t let them get out to their fishing grounds as quickly as they would have liked.
“Slow and steady”, Pino said. They fought the fish close to two and a half hours, on a Shimano reel with 100 lbs line and 400 lbs leader. The BLACK MARLIN weighed in at an impressive 597 POUNDS. A BIG congratulations to anglers and crew aboard!
