Week 41 Pisces Report September 27- October 3, 2024
The week began with cookie-cutter weather that the fleet enjoyed. An additional bonus was the variety of areas holding fish, which allowed the fleet to spread out and avoid the crowd of boats. Yellowfin Tuna dominated the catch most of the week in quantity and size, ranging from single-digit to triple-digit in weight, and often they prefer bait presented by kite. The Dorado was a combination of much smaller fish and a few bulls in the 15 to 30-pound range. Another plus was the Wahoo, which ranged in size from 10 to 30 pounds. In the Billfish category, there was a mix of Sailfish, Striped Marlin, and Blue Marlin, with only a few larger than the 300-pound minimum required for most Marlin tournaments here in Cabo, which begins in October.

Curtis Saliscury, Fian Wood, Mark Miocevicich, and Wendy Saliscury, from South Carolina, chartered the “BILL COLLECTOR II,” a 35-foot Cabo Flybridge with Captain Juan C Lopez and Mate Erick, Jr. running the show for a stunning day on the Sea of Cortez. First, they headed twelve miles outside the Los Arcos Spot, where they caught seven Yellowfin Tuna weighing 25 to 159 pounds on bait, and then on to the Faro Bank, where they caught and released one 280-pound BlueMarlin also on bait. Their skill and determination were evident as they battled these impressive catches, making it an exciting day, and they were ready to go again!
Ari Liberman, Garcia Gerardo, Martinez Gustavo, Rubio Jorge, Pozas Sebastian, and Angola Salaza hired the “CALIENTE,” a 42-foot Cabo Flybridge, to go out for a day of fishing with Captain Jaime at the helm and Mate Luis in charge of the cockpit. The crew headed straight to the 1150 Spot, where they got three Blue Marlin in the 200 to 280-pound range for the anglers to Release and one 30-pound Dorado on bait.
“The RIPPER,” a 35-foot Cabo Flybridge, with Captain Abel and Jose Luis running the boat and straight to the San Jaime where their anglers Bill Downey, Gill Jacobs, Jay Parill, and Scott Sherr from South Carolina caught two 15-pound Dorado on bait, one Yellowfin Tuna weighing 30 pounds on the kite, and they released two 200-pound Blue Marlin on bait.

Barry Albrecht, a solo angler from Oklahoma, decided to charter the “ANDREA,” a 28-foot Uniflite run by Captain Fernando Noyola and Mate Marcelo D. He had the best fishing day of his life when they took him to the San Jaime Bank. He caught and released two 80 to 100-pound Striped Marlin on bait, he caught a couple of Yellowfin Tuna and released a few more, all in the 35 to 45-pound range, and caught and released a 150-pound Blue Marlin all on bait, and all on the San Jaime. He hadn’t dreamed of such a fantastic day when he boarded Andrea that morning!

Jay Fischer and John Waugh, two guys visiting Cabo from Cedar Park, Texas, took the “TIBURON,” a 31-foot Bertram, with Captain Rosendo Gomez and Mate Velez in charge, where they caught three Yellowfin Tuna weighing 40 pounds, 65 pounds and 110 pounds on lures below the San Jaime. They were two proud anglers when they returned to town from the Marina.

Captain Beto Lira and his Mate Velez running the “RUTHLESS,” a 31-foot Bertram, headed outside of the San Jaime with their group from Yreka where they managed to catch (and release) twelve Yellowfin Tuna from 20 to 80 pounds on lures and bait. It was a fun, busy day for this trio!
“REBECCA,” a 31-foot Bertram, with Captain Jose Ramon and Jose G., found seven Yellowfin Tuna 20 to 80 pounds (and one huge 125-pounder) on lures and bait outside of the San Jaime for their guests, Jeremiah Cook, Jodi Kish, Joseph Cook, Kenneth Copic, and Tom Sisson, from Tempe Arizona.
“BILL COLLECTOR II,” a 35-foot Cabo Flybridge, run by Captain Juan Carlos Lopez and Mate JC Martínez, took their couple from Amarillo, Texas, Beau Nelson and Nathalie Dyess, out for a day of fishing 35 miles to the Faro Bank where they caught and released one 100-pound Striped Marlin on a lure, two small Dorado on bait, six Yellowfin Tuna from 30 to 60 pounds on bait, and two 45-pound Wahoo on lures. While the fish put up quite a battle and it was a long day, the tired warriors were eager to give it a go again! The day would be etched in their memories forever.
The solo angler, Ryan Caughren from Florida, chartered the “BBII,” 37-foot Viking Billfish 2018, with Captain Osiel and Mates Joel and Gil. They went 30 miles to the south, where he picked off ten 25 to 110-pound Yellowfin Tuna on bait and lures. A busy fishing day, a 110-pound Yellowfin, what more could Ryan ask for?
“HOT ROD,” a 42-foot Cabo Flybridge with Captain Erick Orozco and Mate Hot Rod Jose Ramiro Ramírez took Diana Treviño de Pozas and Federico Pozas García, from Cabo San Lucas, México, to the Los Arcos Bank where they were able to catch one 15-pound Dorado on a lure one 30-pound Wahoo on a lure.

“KNOT WORKIN,” a-35-foot Cabo Flybridge, Captain TOÑO/ Mates Cesar and Victor took off with a few anglers from Texas, Andrey Sukhachev Nick Rohleder, Steve Dunbar, and Sydney Rohleder and caught and released three 120 pound Striped Marlin on live bait at the Los Arcos and the Faro, and two Dorado weighing 10-pounds on lures at the Ceros de Arenas Spot.
Our solo angler from Florida, Ryan Caughren, returned! He liked the “BBII,” the 37-foot Viking Billfish 2018, and Captain Osiel and Mates Joel and Gil enough to give them another run at the fishing, only this time they headed to the San Jaime. There, he caught and released two 100-pound Striped Marlin on bait, one 180-pound Blue Marlin on a lure, and four Yellowfin Tuna on bait and Kite, with some from 20 to over 100 pounds, the largest weighing 110 pounds. He hit the Jackpot this time, and though tired, he felt like a million dollars.
Captain Jaime and Mates Luis and Silverio of the “CALIENTE,” a 42-foot Cabo Flybridge, were excited when the happy group from Texas, Bill Gibbons, Joseph Wilkinson, Mark Worthington, and Ronald Robinson, descended on the boat. They headed to Barco Varado Bank where they got two 12-pound Dorado and fourteen twelve-pound Yellowfin Tuna all on bait.

Captain Arturo and Mates Daniel and Josue, on the “MY WAY,” a 45-foot Viking, managed to find six Yellowfin Tuna that weighed from 15 to 105 pounds on bait and kite at the San Jaime for clients Bob McEachern, George Harmon, George Wolfe, and Thomas Rafferty from Waco, Texas. The 105-pounders took the wind out of their sail, but they were pleased to get a chance to fight fish that ran from 15 pounds up to 105 pounds.

On the “VALERIE,” a 35-foot Bertram, Captain Roberto Sandez, and Mate Carmelo Navarrete had brought aboard a group from Houston, Texas, who were determined to have a great time.
They headed to the Rancho San Lucas Bank, where they had slim pickings, but the anglers, Kent Wiseman, Mike Kopecky, Richard Jones, Robert (Bobby) Surles, and Ron Hancock, managed to catch five 15-pound Dorado on lures and one 25-pound Wahoo, also on a lure. The “fun in the sun” day was filled with lightness, and the guys claimed they would return for a second chance at something larger.
